Freshies!
mercredi, 03 décembre 2008

Some of you were present for the opening of the Grand Montets ski area this past weekend, and there certainly were no regrets!  A short lift line up at the base, in Argentière, but once up on the mountain, there was room to put in tons of freshies.  Groomed runs are in great condition with good snow cover, and off piste rocks!  These really are exceptional conditions for the month of November.  The mountain is recovering this week, waiting for the new rush this weekend.  More snow is on its way, and the blanket of snow is getting thicker everyday.  Forecast for this weekend: Grands Montets summit opening and perhaps more, the Aiguille and Helbronner will be following suit, re-opening lift access from December 13th onwards.  Get you blue wax out, it's a cold weather wax that your skis are looking for.  And, a last FYI, to celebrate his 22 month birthday, the most recent Peakpowder Team member has put on "real skis" for the first time.  Last Sunday, the dude was motivated and excited by this new adventure....so if you happen to see a kid, about 86 cm tall, wearing a red rocket helmet, pass you in the Glacier Rond, let him know that he can't be late for crèche because his mommy won't be happy if he keeps her waiting!

08/09 Season Kick Off Snow Report
jeudi, 27 novembre 2008

For a season kick off in November, conditions are relatively good.  There's enough white  stuff on the ground at almost all altitudes for everyone to have some fun! We can talk about powder under 2500 m.  Above this altitude, the wind has been at work, deteriorating the stability of the snow pack.  Be aware of wind slabs, as we've noticed several slopes release naturally. This weekend the Grands  Montets will open its doors, and it looks like more of the valley plans to open in the next two weeks.  Happy riding to all, and remember to play it safe out there 'cause the season is only just beginning...we want you all to make it through the season in one piece!!!

Did anyone say "powder"?
vendredi, 14 novembre 2008

And, yes, we did hear the word - POWDER - much to our surprise we were able to put in a few freshies on the Swiss side of the border.  After spending hours sitting in a car, driving endless miles to check out a new region that Peakpowder wishes to promote, a leg stretch was a much needed affair.  What a sweet surprise to find 50 cm of fresh powdery snow.  At 2000m, the cumulated snow fall of about 1.5m has created a good, solid base. It's certainly not a bad way to jump start the season!  Now it's our legs that need to be worked into shape.  FYI the Aiguille du Midi and Pointe Helbronner are closed , reopening December 13th.

And as for our little roadtrip, the Peakpowder dream team was checking out lines in the Dolomites.  Couloirs galore...lots of lines to be invented and tracked...this is couloirs to cars territory - easy access and challenging steeps.  We detoured to say hello to our friends at Ski Trab and Garmont, and to check out what is hot off the press.  Thanks guys for the warm welcome! Check out the Dolomites trip details soon to be online.
