We like FAT - that is, fat skis, fat snow, fat lines...for the rest, we prefer sculpted bodies, not Renaissance shapes; fresh tomato, mozza and basil salads, not southern deep-fried chicken and fries; sparkling Perrier, not Cherry coke! Needless to say that for the past 3 days, the snow quality in Chamonix has been extremely FAT! It's been Spring powder....hugh??? You know the kind - deep fresh snow, light and elastic all at once, fast and stable, no obstacles, just a thick snow pack that keeps rocks hidden. Conditions are perfect to hang loose, let the good times ride and yes, go big or go home. This is easy snow - legs never give in...right? This season has been exceptionnal, no other word describes the conditions we have had in the Chamonix valley any better. Let's enjoy this as long as it lasts. Ski lifts continue to take us up high. The hard work starts when pointing our ski tips downhill, letting our skis carve and riding the snow, nice and easy.

Cream puffs are what came to mind, as we skied a perfect 50° slope in 60cm of fresh powder. An expression of disappointment overcame the client, as he realized that the technical challenge of skiing the slope was ruined by such great snow...you gotta take what comes, and powder sure isn't that bad ! Putting in the track to the summit, I certainly felt the presence of fresh snow. One just needed to point the skis downhill from the top, and let'em glide. Leaving our signatures in the couloir was a delight and the pout turned to a smile almost instantly. The classic North east route on the Courtes was in about the same condition. Easy riding. It was the South face of the Chardonnet that proved a little more technical. Although in good condition, with no gulleys that had formed, the slope was quite sheer. The few snow flakes at the start of the descent, meant a drop in temperature and a snow surface that had changed. It was no longer in Spring condition, but rather finicky hard pack. The magical atmosphere of the couloir was overwhelming, with the cathedrals of orange granite as imposing as ever. Quite a unique descent. And, it's only when seeing the little dots, that look like ants heading towards the Col du Chardonnet, that one realizes the steepness of the slope...humbling!

Warm weather and poor freezing conditions at lower altitudes, have kept us up high. Good descents to be had on south facing slopes, but remember that it's the early bird that catches the worm at this time of the year. No worries for those laid back types, 'cause there's always time for a little afternoon "siesta". Once again, the good skiing was on the Italian side of the Mont Blanc range. 2500m of vertical in great snow conditions. Steep slopes are on the agenda and there may be more powder in sight for the end of the week. Let's wait and see what the weatherman calls for...
