Chamonix is located in the Northern Alps, 15 km from Switzerland and 15 km from Italy, via the Mont Blanc tunnel. The Chamonix valley is dominated by the Mont Blanc, western Europe's highest summit, rising to a height of 4807m.                                                                                                                                     

It's origin is glacial, and the valley is dominated by the Mont-Blanc mountain range to the South and the Aiguilles Rouges mountain range to the North, extending some 17 km in length.  At one end the Col des Montets and at the other the Taconnaz river.  It covers 24 546 hectares. The centre of Chamonix town is at an altitude of 1035 m and the highest village in the valley is Le Tour at 1462 m.

The year round population is 10 109 inhabitants. There is a large variation the tourist influx according the the seasons.  During the summer months, more that 100 000 individuals enter the valley everyday and in the winter period, it is closer to 60 000.

Starting in January, the world's best skiers find themselves racing on the famous "Piste Verte" in Les Houches, one leg of the Arlberg Kandahar World Cup .
Throughout the year, Chamonix hosts a variety of cultural events with its movie cinema, Alpine Museum, Crystal Museum, Frison Roche gallery and library...
